B. 1969, Kortrijk, Belgium
Lives and works between Antwerp, Belgium, and Berlin, Germany

David Claerbout creates large-scale video projects that often combine moving and still images to unsettle the delineation between past and present. His single-channel video projection, Oil workers (from the Shell company of Nigeria) returning home from work, caught in torrential rain (2013), addressed the relationship between African peoples and the oil industry. Claerbout’s work was presented in Sharjah’s Bank Street building, a structure slated for demolition after the biennial.
