Ernesto Neto creates large-scale anthropomorphic sculptures that combine everyday items and organic materials such as panty house and sand. His outdoor installation in Sharjah, titled Enquanto a cultura nos separa, a natureza nos une (While Culture Moves Us Apart, Nature Brings Us Together) (2013), consisted of ice and stones suspended overhead by crochet and polyester rope. Located in Sharjah Heritage Square and surrounded by benches, passersby could sit and watch the ice melt into a pond that nourished a small patch of grass. Neto’s ecosystem was maintained by assistants who had the daily task of replenishing the ice, purposefully drawing attention to the relationship between sustainability and human effort.
