Katrín Sigurdardóttir explores the ways that physical structures and boundaries define our perception. For the Icelandic Pavilion she built Foundation (2013), an ornately-tiled, floating platform based on the footprint of a typical eighteenth-century pavilion. Installed at the Lavenderia (The Old Laundry) at the Palazzo Zenobio in Dorsoduro, Sigurdardóttir described this space as being “a ruin…a shell of a function that is no longer in it.” Foundation crossed the building’s interior and exterior and because it was viewable from multiple angles, visitors could walk on the platform and simultaneously observe themselves within it.
