Shahzia Sikander specializes in Indian and Persian miniature painting, a traditional style that is both highly stylized and disciplined. She blends the Eastern focus on precision and methodology with a Western emphasis on creative, subjective expression. Raised as a Muslim, Sikander is also interested in exploring both sides of the Hindu and Muslim “border,” often combining imagery from both in a single artwork, be it a painting, mural, photograph, animation, or performance. At both Sharjah Biennial 11 and the 13th Istanbul Biennial, Sikander exhibited three-channel animations that incorporated local poetry and engaged each city’s geographical location and social history. Sikander is also featured in Season 1 of Art21’s film series Art in the Twenty-First Century.
