Lives and works in Alexandria

Wael Shawky uses a range of media to produce work that explores issues of history, religion, culture, and the effects of globalization on contemporary society. For his multi-part project Dictums 10:120 (2011–13) he translated fragments of curatorial talks into qawwali song, a style of Muslim devotional music associated with Sufis in Pakistan. Performed by thirty-two men, mostly immigrants and non-professional singers from Pakistan, the project echoed throughout spaces surrounding Sharjah Art Foundation.
