"A lot of people start out, if they're dance people, with classical ballet...and they kind of figure out that modern is also interesting. For me, it was just the opposite. I never understood ballet, never liked it, and I always understood Merce Cunningham's work and loved it. I learned video and taught it to Merce. I had made films before that but didn't have access to video. But when we got started, it was a way to dinstinguish dance documentation...actually making pieces with dance and video where they were equal elements in it, although it was very much about the dance."
