"People have such differing reactions to clowns. A lot don’t like them, or are afraid or suspicious of them. That’s kind of the attitude I was trying to get out of the characters—trying to make them look a little seedier around the edges, a little as if maybe there’s some sort of desperation as to why they’re clowns."
