"For years I kept files on concentration camps, both historical and contemporary. What interests me is the idea of a large portion of the population being excluded from civil rights—that you have people who are almost socially dead. That’s what I’m researching. What does it mean to be socially dead? What does it mean to be alive and not be able to participate?"
