"’Nocturne (White Poppies )’ was a response to the bombing of Afghanistan and the flower as a source of violence at that particular moment. I was interested in investigating the fact that that flower was not a natural creation. It was a cultural and an historical creation. I used the technology that’s usually aimed at what’s ugly- which is war- to aim it at this flower, which contains both the beautiful and the ugly at the same time- a heroin poppy. I’m also addressing the media, because now the news of war is actually an object of consumerism. It’s no longer just news edification. And so I’m repackaging the image."
