"When I started to work on the paintings, the paintings were more structures than actual canvas. They were not done like a traditional painting- you know, you take a stretcher, you put your canvas over it and then you paint on this rectangular size or whatever size that you’re painting on. Mine were always different pieces, and different ways of thinking about what I was working with. And the structure was as important as whatever it was I was painting."
