"I’m not the best qualified to figure out what I have to do with art history or what art history has to do with me, but I know that I’ve always admired Goya’s black paintings. These are what I would do if I could. I’ve been walking up to the black paintings for so many years, and I couldn’t figure out what they meant to me. I think I salted that away, though, and when the material started coming out about the conflict in Afghanistan and Iraq, and about the camps in the Middle East and Guantanamo, Goya was at hand."
