"The cues for the basic color palette and figuration in ‘Attendant’ come from a very small Mexican retablo, a devotional painting on tin, dating from the mid- to late nineteenth century. It depicts a flagellated Christ...I reconfigured the central image but I had to refer to the retablo because I’ve rarely done figurative work. Before I could just look at nature and invent; here I needed an actual cue for figuration."
