Production still from "Consumption" (2001)

Matthew Barney and Richard Serra on the set of "CREMASTER 3" (2002), Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY, 2000
Production still from the "Art in the Twenty-First Century" Season 1 episode, "Consumption," 2001

"Richard [Serra] has been a major influence on my work—particularly, the Throwing Lead pieces that he did in the late '60s. Of the types of work that I gravitated towards in art school, those were the first pieces that I think I truly understood. The way that violence is sublimated into form somehow...which is for me what Throwing Lead is. That, as a theme, is sort of central to what my project is about."
