"For us, the idea of having a work that has contradictions is very important—when, in affirming something, it includes itself and attacks itself. How can you put together all of these things that have nothing to do with each other? You use glue! Glue can be an idea, a word. You can use an ideological glue."
"I had a lot of conversations with a group of youngsters in the Newark area...and when it came to incarceration, there was a dead silence in the room. I remember it was a group of young kids who had experienced growing up in the absence of their father. And the minute there was a death silence, I just thought, this is it, this is the topic. Growing up in the absence of your father, your father might have been there physically, but spiritually, mentally and psychologically- they’re not there, they’re not present. And I think that I wanted to explore more about that in the work."
