"In ‘Coddle,’ the structure- the already existing thing that I know and the viewer knows- is this painting of the Madonna and Child. We all know things about that kind of representation of maternal love that’s come to us through art history. Then I can go from this objective place to a very subjective place. To hold my leg and look at it as something other than myself and love it is an interesting experience to give myself. There are a lot of things in that pose that seem charged for me. So here I am, literally holding myself."
